British Council supports Nigeria in History Photo Exhibition

Abuja’s leading art gallery, Thought Pyramid Art Centre has recently unveiled pictures of Nigeria from the early 1900s which was archived by one of Nigeria’s foremost historians and photo collector extraordinaire, Alh. Baba Shettima.
The event themed, ‘OUR HISTORY, YOUR STORY, OUR FUTURE’ was curated and organized by Sharon Kaburuk, a recipient of a grant award from British Council Creative Cities UKNG.
The ceremony was colourfully celebrated among keen and enthusiastic youth and supporters and of Nigeria’s inspiring journey, supported by Integrated Diaries Ltd, Centre for Arts and Creative Talent and TaTsuniya Ent.

The exhibition showcased strategic pre and post-colonial historical pictures with hopes to drive useful conversations and possible interventions on very important national historical events, festivals and other memories, which active youths are losing fast because of our poor archiving culture.
While addressing the gathering, the event organizer and initiator #NigerianHistoryMatters, Sharon Kaburuk, emphasized that “ the society today ignores the past, we prefer to define ourselves in terms of where we are going, not where we come from. The pictures   unveiled today reminds us of our heritage in reality, to awaken the need to look closer at the truths we overlook”.
According to her, with the recent re-introduction of history in Nigeria by the current administration, this #NigerianHistoryMatters campaign, through the efforts of TaTsuniya Ent. and Thought Pyramid Art Centre, will embark on projects and activities to foster the importance of thoughts and research of history in schools as well as make proactive steps by embarking on projects to encourage creative talents, documentaries as well as attention on well documented visual art to preserve our history and culture.
