Buhari’s letters, economy top agenda as Senate resumes plenary

As the Senate resumes plenary tomorrow, the two pending letters from President Muhammadu Buhari already with the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and bills on economic reforms at different stages of consideration are set to top its agenda aside continued consideration of the N7.289trillion 2017 budget estimates at various committee levels.

While the two pending letters from the President, i.e., the one requesting for extension of his medical vacation in London and the other on request for confirmation of Justice Walter Onoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), would be read to senators by the Senate President, some in house bills on economic reforms at different stages of their passage, shall be presented before the Senate by its Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan (APC Yobe North) for further consideration.
Disclosing the agenda yesterday through a personally signed statement, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (APC Niger North), said two of such bills that would be considered are the Independent Warehouse Regulatory Agency Act and the Company and Allied Matters Act (CAMA).

Sabi in the statement added that from today, various committees are expected to start submitting reports of 2017 budget defence various MDAs had with them to the Committee on Appropriations based on schedule earlier provided.
According to him, this will be followed by compilation of the reports by the Appropriation committee and engagement with the leadership of the Senate and interface with some committees where necessary.
“The last stage of the budget process will be lying of report at plenary by the Appropriation Committee as well as the consideration and passage of the Appropriation Bill”, he said.
