Goods seizure: Reps ask customs CG to call his men to order

The House of Representatives has called on Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Col.
Hameed Ali (rtd.) to stop illegal seizure of goods, especially textile materials within the country.
The House Committee on Customs has been mandated to conduct a detailed investigation into the activities of the Service’s personnel on the reported impounding of shoes and textile materials in Kano and routes leading to Kano, and report back its findings within four weeks.
A member, Hon.
Aliyu Madaki, and three others through a motion of urgent national importance, drew attention of the House to alleged illegal practices of Customs personnel, who have “seized in quantum, shoes that were bought from Aba markets, and on their way to Kano and vice-versa”.
According to Madaki, who moved the motion on behalf of his colleagues, the illegal operations were now being extended beyond the Kano metropolis, and all routes leading to the city.
He argued that the actions, if not checked, “are capable of retarding the growth of commerce and trade in Kano, and the quantum of its adverse effect cannot be imagined”.
