Kebbi state government has awarded a N40 million contract for the seasonal spray of quelea birds and rodents that caused nightmare to the teeming rice farmers and reduced harvest at the end of every farming season.
Fagging off of the activity at the Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport, Birnin Kebbi, the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Samaila Yombe Dabai, and the team leader of the exercise, said the spray exercise would last for two weeks.
He said the Governor Atiku Abubakar Bagudu-led administration had accorded priority to agriculture, adding that “this is the reason has given much attention to any outbreak of pests and diseases capable of causing low yields.”
Dabai further said the company had bought adequate chemicals to fight the pests, but warned that birds or rodents killed as a result of the exercise should not be consumed “as it is also harmful to human beings.”
The Commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Alhaji Garba Muhammad Dandiga, in his remarks, thanked the state government for the “timely intervention,” adding that rodents and quelea birds had always been the problem faced by farmers in recent times.
He said farmers would remain ever grateful to the government for the wonderful gesture done for them.
Also speaking, the permanent secretary in the ministry, Alhaji Lawal Argungu, said already government had procured pesticides for onward distribution to affected farmers.
