MAPOLY lecturers reject retired principal as rector

The crisis rocking Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Abeokuta, deepens as lecturers rejected the appointment of a retired school principal, Mr. Ayodeji Tella, as the acting rector of the polytechnic after former Rector, Prof. Oludele Itiola, was relieved of his appointment by the state government.
Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) in MAPOLY kicked against Tella’s appointment on the ground that he is a retired principal and lacks the experience about tertiary education administration.
Itiola was sacked as a result of the crisis that followed the conversion of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic to a University of Science and Technology and the establishment of a new Ogun State Polytechnic in Ipokia.
According to reports, the president of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Malam Usman Dutse, complained about infractions in the appointment of polytechnic rectors in the country.
He said despite the 30 number chief lecturers and 57 PhD holders in MAPOLY, the government went ahead to appoint Tella who, according to him, does not have the academic and professional standing of an acting rector.
“Despite the fact that the institution can boast of 30 chief lecturers with 57 PhD holders, intelligence report alleged that a retired school principal with little or no experience in teaching at the tertiary level, research and community service was appointed as acting rector”, Dutse added.
