NB flags off 2017 Maltina Teacher of the year award

Th e Nigerian Breweries Plc has fl agged off the 2017 Maltina Teacher of the Year award at a ceremony that took place recently in Lagos. Th e initiative was launched in 2015 to recognise, celebrate and motivate teachers in Nigeria to excellence in the performance of their duties. It has continued over the years as part of Nigerian Breweries Plc’s commitment in developing education in the country. NB’s Corporate Aff airs Adviser, Mr. Kufre Ekanem, in a statement said in line with the ideology of, Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund foundation, the company has expanded its intervention in education to teachers.

He noted that Maltina Teacher award initiative was hinged on the realisation that teachers seldom get the recognition they deserve in spite of the pivotal role they play in determining the quality of education and the human person in society. Commissioner for education from Taraba state, Jigem Johanes, Commissioner of Education, Akwa Ibom state, Pastor Paul Alexander Udofa, Permanent Secretary in the offi ce of Deputy Governor Lagos state, Mrs. Yetunde Odejayi, Professor Aloy Ejiogu of education department, University of Lagos, were among other dignitaries present at the event. Mrs. Odejayi commended Nigerian Breweries, and said the award would help enhance and promote healthy relationship among teachers nationwide.

“Th e teaching profession particularly is unique because it involves building the lives for our future leaders and building human capital for national development,” she said. “I believe the moral of the award would simply teach us to know that in whatever assignment we are given, we must be passionate and committed to it because one day these qualities will stand us out from the crowd.” Ejiogu praised the eff ort of teachers, as curators of minds, adding, “No one can do what teachers do; teachers are so many personalities rolled into one.

Teachers can be seen as counselors, mentors, friends, surrogate parents, disciplinarians, classroom control experts, role dynamic facilitators, motivational speakers, touch bearers, as well as subject matter specialists.” Each state champion will get N500,000 and top 10 teachers will be recognised. Th e second and fi rst runners-up will receive trophies and an additional N750,000 and N1 million respectively. Maltina Teacher of the Year 2017 will get an additional N1 million instantly, plus N1 million every year for the next fi ve years, a development training opportunity abroad and a block of classroom built in the school where he or she teaches, Ekanem disclosed in a statement
