NEMA: NASS Seeks urgent intervention to save Delta community

The Senate yesterday urged the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the Federal Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to take steps to prevent the shore wall of Tuomo town in Delta state from total collapse.

It also enjoined the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA to immediately take relief material, and services to the people of the town.

Similarly, the Senate, which advised the Ecological Fund Office to provide special fund for Tuomo, mandated its Committee on Niger Delta to visit and inspect the town and report on the content of the motion “within seven days.”

These were sequel to a motion, “Landslide in Tuomo in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State and the imminent carving in of the town, the need for urgent intervention” by Senator James Manager (PDP, Delta South).

Manager informed that “on March 14, 2018, the inhabitants of Tuomo town in Burutu local government area of Delta state were woken up by a devastating and progressive landslide.”

He lamented that the landslide

had caused a near collapse of the shore protection wall built to prevent the moving water from flooding and overtaking the town.

“Right now, many houses are at the brink of collapse or at point of carving in due to the force of the water”, the lawmaker said, warning that if something is not done urgently, the situation would degenerated to a colossal disaster,” he said.
