Why non academic staff unions suspend strike

Non-teaching staff unions of universities said they have suspended their nationwide strike which started in December last year due to the extensive consultations they had had with various organs of the union and stakeholders.
The chairman of the Joint Action Committee of the unions, Samson Ugwuoke, announced the suspension of the industrial action at a briefing on Wednesday, March 14 in Abuja.
“Based on extensive consultations with our various organs, we hereby announce the suspension of the strike action embarked upon by JAC with effect from today, March 14.”
Ugwuoke said that the federal government will implement their demands within five weeks after which all stakeholders will re-converge at the ministry.
“Machinery has been put in place for all our demands, money should be in the account of our members by then and the presidency should have replied and given directive for the visitation panel to the university on corruption issue within the five weeks,” he said.
He however said, “We shall not hesitate to resume the strike if government reneges on the agreements reached or delays in any aspects.”
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) include the National Association of Academic Technologists, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities.
Meanwhile, the federal government said it would source for eight billion naira within five weeks to pay the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities.
The minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige announced this at a resolution reached at a conciliation meeting with the union in Abuja on March 13.
