Of Sheriff’s defection and Nyako’s impeachment

I was highly impressed with the cover story of Sunday Trust of this week for exposing PDP’s dirty strategy in creating tension not only in 6 states but the whole federation.
Now that the PDP has turned Nigerian politics into a do or die affair what remains? Where is our democracy?
I don’t believe that former governor Murtala Nyako is guilty of the entire allegation levelled against him by the state lawmakers but frankly speaking, I have no sympathy for Baba Mai Mongoro for the simple reason that he was amongst those that imposed President Goodluck Jonathan on us.

Majority of Nigerian politicians would never learn lessons from the past. This is the third time in my column I will recount one memorable experience I had as a teenager when we went camping. I told my mom (may her soul rest in perfect peace) that I was scared whenever we were by the campfire because of an insect called “Fada Wuta,” Hausa, meaning “jump into the fire”.What always surprised and confused me about the insect was the way and manner the insect comes on a line one after the other to jump into the fire without considering that the others died; they keep jumping into the fire.

I asked my mom, “if not that the insect has no brain, how could it keep doing that?”  She told me that even greedy and selfish people behave exactly the same way. She explained that when I grow up only then will I understand. As my mother, I couldn’t say I don’t believe her but wondered how human beings can behave like insects.
It is exactly 25 years now and I now understand fully what she meant. Because you can see a politician who after stealing and looting public funds but within few months after his exit from office can’t fend for themselves anymore and leaves you wondering if he ever occupied that position. Some of the politicians will end up with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), while others cannot return to their people or the people he disgraced when he was in power who now occupy his former office. All these examples are supposed to serve as a lesson.
Nyako is one of those people that are behind President Jonathan’s successful election 100%; he fought his people. I could remember how he showed his ballot paper to the world openly that he voted Jonathan. Therefore, whatever Jonathan is doing today, good or bad, Nyako has a reward.
However, the decamping of Modu Sheriff, a former governor of Borno state, to PDP can only take a child by surprise. It is no secret that Modu Sheriff enjoys the support and privileges of the Jonathan administration better than any other member of even PDP in Borno state.
His squabbleswith a senator 2 years ago is enough to make anyone surprised at APC’s acceptance of him or even giving him a position. PDP is the party where whatever crime you committed, you are always welcome to their umbrella of protection. Nigerians know the beginning of the PDP but only God’s knows how it will end.
The only man that Nigerians are waiting to join PDP too is Senator Ahmed Sani Yeriman Bakura who led Islamic clerics to the Villa to pray for Jonathan and Nigeria.
My pen has slowed down for Jonathan for some time now because I am completely confused. My reasons being that the Vice President, Minister of Defence, Adviser on Security, Inspector General of Police, Customs boss, Senate President, Speaker and even the chairman of the ruling party are all northerners and majority of them are Muslims yet the North today has been turned to a dangerous zone.
Another confusing thing is that people who swore that even if there is no other party in Nigeria but PDP they would not decamp because they believe PDP is the party of  evil, armed robbers, a cult and doesnot mean well for the masses have today joined the party and are given red carpet treatment. I don’t know what to make of it.
So journalists and columnist are virtually helpless they have to be very careful in praising personalities, more especially political leaders, though the society depends on the media to know the good people in the society so as to either support or emulate them.
I really pity people like General Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso of Kano state and Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers state, who joined APC with a vision and mission. But considering what Bola Ahmed Asiwaju Tinubu did in the last presidential election can he be trusted again? It is going to be his political somersault if he betrays the North again.
