Speakers seek end to killings, abductions in Nigeria

The 36 state legislatures yesterday condemned the alarming rate of killings and abductions across the nation, calling the federal and state governments to put in proactive measures to address the challenge with urgency.

In a communiqué signed by the chairman, Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, Ismail Ahmed Kamba, at the end of a two day quarterly conference of speakers of state legislatures of Nigeria in Gusau, Zamfara state, the state legislatures expressed worry over the rampant cases of killings and abductions across the country.

Specifially, the conference commiserated with Yobe state government over the recent abduction of the 110 Dapchi schoolgirls as well as the entire family of the victims of various clashes across the country, over armed banditry in the states which led to killings of many innocent people.

The conference described acts of armed bandits in zamfara state, clashes in some parts of the country, including Benue, Taraba, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Kogi among others as unfortunate and callous and appealed to relevant stakeholders and security agencies to intensify efforts with a view to curbing the nefarious activities of the criminals.

Meanwhile, at the end of their meeting, the conference dissolved its executive committee and set up a six man care taker committee which includes Speakers of Kebbi, Enugu, Yobe, Plateau, Ondo and Delta states to serves as chairman for North West, SouTheast, NorTheast, North Central , South West and South South, respectively
