Allow INEC to conduct credible polls, FJP warns PDP, APC

The Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) has warned the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against distracting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from conducting  free, fair and credible general elections.

The party chairman, Dr Onwubuya J.Abraham Breakforth, who warned the two major parties Thursday, said the duo had in the past few days heated up the polity by raising unnecessary fuss over the commission’s valid reasons for shifting by a week the dates for the general elections.

The FJP said the resort to accusations of compromise against the INEC adduced by both parties was a major distraction to the electoral which should be allowed to concentrate efforts and logistics on preparations for presidential/ National Assembly elections billed for tomorrow and the March 9 governorship poll.

“We of the Freedom and Justice Party understand the postponement was due to sabotage by some government institutions and agencies who are responsible for the movement of sensitive materials from various airports in the country.

“For example, Abuja airport for North-central states, Kano airport for North-west states, Maiduguri airport for North-east states, Port Harcourt airport for South-south states, Enugu airport for South-east states, and Lagos airports for South-west states,” but lamented that the agencies responsible did not play their parts as expected.

The party said postponement of elections which occurred in 2011 and 2015 and the present situation clearly demonstrates that it goes beyond the INEC but is about the enormity of the task of INEC, other human factors vagaries.

Consequently, the party said rather heat up the polity by smearing INEC with unpleasant tar, they cooperate with it to conduct elections which would fair and credible.

“We condemn the persistence trade of words between the APC and PDP, accusations and counter accusations, nobody should throw our country into warzone because of his or her political ambition.

“We appeal to the two leading candidates of the APC and PDP to please see this election as not a do or die affair, only Almighty God chooses leaders for the people.

“We also warn any politician who is planning to rig or carryout electoral malpractices to cancel plans as it is capable of destroying our nascent democracy”, the party said stressing that the electoral umpire as the right to election date if it found that the processes would encounter undemocratic acts”, Breakforth, who is also the party’s presidential candidate said.
