Arsenal crowned WSL champions after thrashing Brighton

Arsenal sealed their first Women’s Super League crown since 2012 after a thumping 4-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.

In front of 5,265 spectators – a new WSL-record attendance – the Gunners took just six minutes to break the deadlock as Vivianne Miedema notched her 22nd goal of the season when her shot crashed in off the underside of the crossbar.

Netherlands international Miedema turned provider for Katie McCabe to double Arsenal’s lead after half an hour, and a third WSL title was wrapped up through second-half strikes from Beth Mead and Danielle van de Donk.

Gunners boss Joe Montemurro told BT Sport: “There’s a lot of emotion. I’m proud of the players and the way they’ve gone about it this year.

& I’m already thinking about next year and making sure we stay at the top. The WSL is a very tough league, and we’ve needed to be adaptable.&

The result means Arsenal now have an unassailable six-point lead over Manchester City with one game remaining having won 17 of their 19 matches and scoring an impressive 69 goals in the process.

The Gunners will parade the WSL trophy after facing City in their final game of the season on May 11.
