Border crisis claims 19 lives, houses razed in Taraba community

No fewer than 19 people were killed and several houses razed down in Kente village in Wukari local government area of Taraba state after border crisis erupted between the Tiv and the Jukun people residing in the community.

An eyewitness, Mr. Paul walkimono, who spoke toblueprint on phone said the crisis started on Sunday when both tribes had disagreement over land border.
“This issue of land border between the Tiv and the Jukun in Kente village has been for long. The Tiv and the Jukun people shared the same boundary.

“They have been living together for long and they even inter-married. Border issue  is not something that is soposed to cause  crisis between them,” he said.

He stated that the governor of Taraba state,  Darius Ishaku and his Benue counterpart, Mr. Samuel Ortom, had met at different points between 2015 and 2019, to resolve the lingering border crisis that erupted over the years.

He said the  governor of the two states also met in 2018 and agreed on peaceful demarcation of the boundary between the two states that have caused communal crises for decades.

But when contacted, the Taraba state police public relations officer, DSP David Misal told Blueprint through a text message  that he was yet to get update on the crisis.
