Clearing agent steals N3.8m stock fish in Apapa


A 37-year-old clearing agent, Cyril Cyriacus, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing 100 bags of stock fish worth N3.8 million at Apapa.

Cyriacus is facing a two-count charge of false pretence and stealing.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Kolade Tedunjaye, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometimes in September 2017 at about 9.30 am at Apapa. 

“The defendant obtained the sum of N3.8 million from one Doris Okafor on the pretence to supply her 100 bags of stock fish knowing same to be false,” Tedunjaye said.

The prosecutor also said that the defendant stole the sum of N3.8 million property of one Doris Okafor.

According to her, the offences are punishable under sections 314 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.

Magistrate B.M Amore granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

The sureties, according to the Magistrate, must furnish the court with proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

One of the sureties must have a landed property.

He adjourned the case till February 25, 2019 for mention.
