Elections: Ortom commends professional conduct of INEC, security

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state yesterday commended the professional conduct of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies in the state in the last Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly Elections.

Ortom who spoke with newsmen Thursday in Makurdi stated that due to the professional conduct of INEC officials and security men in Benue, the election was relatively peaceful.

He however, said the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) stakeholders are holding a meeting and will come out with a position on how they viewed the general conduct of the election in the state.

“I am aware that my party rejected the outcome of the presidential election at the national level and I am fully behind them on the decision.”

He stated that leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Benue state, Senator George Akume dared the might of Benue people and paid for it.

Ortom also stated that Senator Akume who had boasted before the presidential and National Assembly elections that he would use federal might to win the polls incurred the anger of Benue people who rejected him and his party, APC.

He said he was happy that people in the state were beginning to have a grasp of what democracy is all about.

The governor described as shameful the behaviour of senator Akume who led supporters to destroy PDP campaign materials in the name of celebrating Buhari’s victory.

“No sensible leader will do what Akume did yesterday in Makurdi. It is shameful for one who calls himself a leader to lead thugs to loot people at the Wadata market and destroy other property in the name of celebration.

“Akume should be grateful to Benue people for allowing him stay in power for twenty years,’’ he said.
