Kano re-run: CSO warns on misleading information

A civil society group, StandNigeria Initiative, an election observer in the recently concluded elections in Kano state, has describe as “falsehood” the information be peddled by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that elections in Kano, especially the re-run, were not free and credible.

It also stated that the recent interview captioned “Why Ganduje’s re-election cannot stand” by the PDP’s governorship candidate, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, was “misleading the general public, especially those who were not in Kano for the re-run elections because those who were on ground indeed knew that elections were not only credible, but free and fair.”

The coordinator of the group, Mr James Waya, stated this on Monday in Abuja while briefing journalists on its activities on the general elections.

“We must verify information we get and receive to ascertain the authenticity before we consume and even post to our friends and family. I saw disturbing pictures from the 2010 Ivory Coast elections’ crisis being showcased as the post- re-run elections crisis in Kano state. These worrisome pictures have the capacity to misinform and mislead people, especially those outside Kano,” he said.

On the Rivers state elections, he advised the Independent Electoral Commission of Nigeria (INEC) to “quickly conclude the Rivers elections and declare winners as the process is now becoming embarrassing.”

“The blame game between political parties, security and INEC cannot continue as we must stand our ground to see that INEC, as a matter of national security, announces the already collated results as we will remain on ground in Rivers to ensure that all is done in line with best international practices.”
