’Kwara North has no objection to Popoola’s speakership bid’

Kwara North zone has said it has no objection to Honourable Saheed Popoola’s bid as Speaker of Kwara state House of Assembly (KSHA).

This was disclosed by the Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq Campaign Organisation (AACO) Director General, Mr Muhammad Kudu, Wednesday in Abuja against the backdrop of clamour by some groups that the position should be zoned to Kwara North.

Kudu said that he had no right to object to the candidacy of Popoola’s, irrespective of clamour for zoning of the position to Kwara North, adding that the issue of speaker was a constitutional matter.

“I have no objection to Popoola’s bid to become the speaker of KSHA, I cannot hold any objections where there is constitutional matter.’’

He said that the house law was very clear on who should emerge as the speaker, stressing that it was a law made by the KSHA itself and it would not augur well to go against it.

“Who am I or any other to person to go against such rule; the only thing we can do for now is call on the 23 KSHA members elect to swallow the bitter truth and accept the reality of Popoola’s candidacy as it were,” he said.

Kudus noted that KSHA rules regarding the position of the speaker affirmed that it was only a returning member that could emerge as the speaker of the house of assembly.

Popoola is an incumbent member of the KSHA, representing Ojomu Balogun Constituency in Offa in Kwara South.

He was the only House member who refused to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) when Sen. Bukola Saraki left the APC in 2018.

Some elders from Kwara North Senatorial District had called for the zoning of the speaker to the northern part of the state in the interest of fairness and justice.

The elders premised their decision on the fact that Kwara Central already has the governor, Kwara South the deputy governor and Kwara North should be allowed to produce the speaker. (NAN)
