NCC urges consumers to be wary of cyber criminals

Meanwhile, the commission has advised consumers to be wary of tech trends and cyber criminals activities to avoid being victim on the internet.

The executive vice chairman of NCC Professor Umar Danbatta, said this at the 48th Consumer Town Hall Meeting (CTM) which held at Oba Okunade Sijuwade Memorial Hall, Ile Ife, Osun state.

He said, “The Consumer Town Hall Meeting was instituted by the NCC as one of the platforms for continuous conversation on the challenges and developments in telecommunications.

This year, the focus is on trends in the cyber world, so the telecom consumers will be adequately informed particularly about the wiles of the criminal users of the Internet in order not to fall victim”.

Represented by head of information and reference unit at the consumer affairs bureau of the NCC, Ismail Adedigba, stated that in line with the commission’s mandate to continuously educate and enlighten the consumers on industry issues, the theme of the ongoing consumer engagements – ‘Mitigating Effects of Cybercrimes: The Roles of Telecom Consumers’ – is carefully chosen to heighten sensitisation of the telecoms consumers on the rising wave of cybercrimes in its various manifestations and the dangers it poses; as well as the role telecom consumers are expected to play in reducing the impacts of cybercrimes.

“As important stakeholders, it is our belief at NCC that unless the consumers become aware of trends in cybercrime and make efforts to ensure safe use of connected devices, cybercriminals will continue to make cyberspace unsafe.” He said individuals and corporate users of the cyberspace need to be more vigilant.

He said, there is need for them to prevent unauthorised access to their devices, to refrain from unnecessary disclosures of information about themselves and their family members, and to take extra care when transacting business online in order not to compromise the integrity of their platforms and personal information.
