Surety charged with document forgery to secure bail

A 57-year-old surety, Mufutau Lasisi has been charged with conspiracy and forgery of documents to secure bail before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The defendant, whose address was not given in court, is facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and forgery.

The Prosecutor, Inspector Benson Emuerhi, said the defendant conspired with others still at large to commit the offences on November 27, 2018, at Magistrate Court 19, at Samuel Ilori Court House in Ogba, Ikeja.

“Lasisi presented a forged land document to secure a bail of a defendant undergoing trial in order to defeat the course of justice,” the prosecutor said.

Emuerhi also told the court that Lasisi forged a building survey plan and presented it in court to secure the bail.

“Upon investigation, the documents were found to be forged,’’ Emuerhi told the court.

The alleged offences contravene Sections 97, 365 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Chief Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat granted him bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Sule-Amzat said the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case until April 25 for mention.
