Theft: Man, 32, docked for stealing car brain box

A 32-year-old auto-mechanic, Azeez Adedokun, who allegedly stole his client’s car brain box valued at N300,000, on Friday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The defendant, who lives at No. 20 Akinlabi St., Ikeja, is facing a three-count charge of false pretences, stealing and breach of the peace, but he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

According to the prosecutor, ASP Akeem Raji, the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by abandoning the Mercedes Benz, property of one Mr Tunde Moshood.

Raji told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Nov.15, 2018, at noon on Tonade Street, Ikeja.

He said the defendant obtained the sum from Moshood on the pretext of repairing the ML Mercedes Benz

“The complainant gave the said car to the defendant for a repair but he drove the car to an unknown destination and removed the brain box worth N300, 000.

“The defendant maliciously damaged the car by abandoning it on the street,” he said.

The alleged offences contravene Section 314, 287 and 168 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015, (Revised).

The offence is punishable with a 14-year jail term while stealing attracts three years’ imprisonment.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.A. Layinka, admitted the defendant to N25, 000 bail with one surety in like sum.

Layinka ruled that the surety must be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She added that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

Layinka adjourned the case until April 23 for mention.
