Trafficking: NIS parades 8 victims

Kano state command of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has paraded eight victims of human trafficking who hail from Edo and Delta states enroute Kano-Niger, Libya to Italy.

Parading the victims, all females, the state commandant, Alhaji Ishag Yusuf, said his officers were on the trail of both the agents who are Nigeriens and the victims since they received intelligence report on their movement.

“It will interest you to know that it is some of the parents that are even encouraging their children to leave this country with the belief that their lives would be better while in the foreign country,” he said.

According to him, it is not true that some of these countries are better than Nigeria; most times victims are only dehumanised and reduced to sex machines that is if they arrived their target destinations safely.

He said in a situation where by they failed to make it to Europe, they would be abandoned in the Niger, Libya, Mali deserts and met their untimely death.

“Therefore, the Kano command will no longer allow the state to serve as a transit state; we will do our best to enlighten victims. We are in touch with NAPTIP, the agency responsible for the fight against human trafficking. We will ask them to train the victims on various vocational trades of their choice for them to be on their feet.

“I believe with good skills they will have economic engagement, but greener posture with unskilled labour will only amount to waste of human beings; and that is why they are being raped, enslaved and subjected to inhuman condition.”
