Transport experts harp on integrated mobility on roads


Experts in the transportation sector have stressed for the need to see how mobility can be enhanced in all the cities across the country.

The Executive Secretary of the Transportation Growth Initiative (TGI) Dr Adeyemi Omidiji, at the stakeholders workshop on sustainable urban mobility in Abuja Thursday, said there is also the need for the federal government to bring up policies as a legislation to enhance the roads in all the cities.

The workshop was themed : “The role of Policy and Legislation towards urban mobility reform in Nigeria “.

Dr Omidiji said the federal government has neglected the aspect that people must walk , ride bicycles and intercity train system and mass system .

He said the country is used to cars and neglected other aspect of mobility. “most of our bus stop don’t have a bicycle hanger. This is an International best practices the country should adopt”. 

Also, the Sector Commander Federal Road Safty Corp (FRSC) Lagos State Hyginus Omeje expressed concern that there is no political will to enforce the restriction of motorcyclists in the state .

According to him, as at 2012, there was a law in Lagos state that restricted motorcyclists  not to use major highways but interms of implementation there was an hiccups.

On provision of Pedestrian walkways , Omeje said Nigeria roads are too wide and should be reconstructed thereby creating space for pedestrian walkways and cyclists. 

Also, the Director of Administration and Strategy of TG Engr John Emmanuel in a paper presentation said the country need to transform it cities to conform to global best practices.

He said we must shift from promoting cars centering mobility into focus on public transport , cycling and walking .

He said those are the focus of sustainable urban mobility across the world adding that  Nigeria has been left behind for a long time.
