Two parties for Surulere councillorship by-election – LASIEC

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has said only two political parties would participate in the ward A (Obelle Oniwala) Surulere councillorship by-election on Saturday (April 27).

The commission’s Head of Public Affairs, Mr Oladapo Olatunde, made the disclosure in a statement in Lagos midweek.

He gave the parties as the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Olatunde said that Mr Kazeem Bello (APC) and Mr Abdul Lateef Sanni (PDP) had been cleared as candidates for the by-election.

“The councillorship by-election will be conducted in the fourteen polling units in the affected ward by the commission.

“11,095 eligible registered voters in the area are expected to vote for the candidate of their choice during the exercise,” Olatunde said.

The commission’s spokesman also said the training of personnel engaged for the successful conduct of the election would be completed by today.

“Majority of the personnel will however be drawn from the pool of the in-house personnel of the commission in view of the relatively small number of personnel required for the conduct of the election,” he said.

Olatunde urged eligible voters in the affected ward to participate actively in the process to elect a new councillor.

The by-election is coming up due to the death of Mr Razak Bello (APC), the councillor that represented the ward in 2018.

LASIEC had on April 10 released the notice of the by-election to the public.
