1, 311 NYSC members pass out in Gombe

A total of 1,311 corps members passed out at a low-key  ceremony marking the completion of the mandatory one year national service for the 2019 Batch “B” Stream 1 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Gombe State.

The ceremony which held Thursday at the NYSC Zonal office in Bolari, Gombe Local Government Area of the State recorded few corps members in attendance in compliance with the social distancing directive.

Mrs Florence Yaakugh, the State Co-ordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Gombe State office, urged the passing out members to comply with all health authorities’ directives against coronavirus.

Yaakugh said there was need for corps members to comply with the directive for the sake of their protection and that of their family members.

She further called on the passing out members to ensure the use  of all acquired skills in the course of their one year mandatory service year and not stay idle waiting for white collar jobs.

She stated that it was important for corps members to acquire skills that would be used to sustain themselves, adding that “ it was in that light that the NYSC introduced skills acquisition and many youths have benefited from the programme.

“With this programme, many corps members have produced face masks and sanitizers which we used to support the state government,” she said.

The state coordinator while giving reasons for the low turn out of corps members said: “ it is in line with the Federal Government and NYSC protocols to ensure social distancing to protect corps members.

“ The passing out would last for the next ten days in adherence to the COVID-19 protocols as directed by our Director General. If all members are allowed to gather, we can’t observe the physical distancing directive.

“All corps members not in the state at the moment would collect theirs after the interstate lockdown is eased,” she said.
She commended both the Federal and the Gombe state Governments for taking proactive measures through sensitisation to protect Nigerians and corps members, adding “ in Gombe state, there is no report of our member with COVID-19 and we thank God.”
