A ghastly road accident, Wednesday night, killed 10 people in Babale village on the Jos-Bauchi highway, the state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Alphonso Godwin, has confirmed.
He further confirmed that 15 others sustained serious injuries.
A community youth leader, Sani Muhammad Babale, who witnessed the accident, said a “truck coming from Jos had its propeller broken, failed break, and rammed into about six cars.
“Ten people instantly died, about 20 others were rushed to the hospitals, and we are told that two others have died,” he said.
The worsening dilapidation of roads is causing serious accidents on Nigerian roads, with frequent accidents on Jos-Bauchi highway leading to Northeast part of the country.
Besides bad roads, reckless driving, violations of roads and traffic regulations are other factors causing accidents, that are killing many lives on daily basis.
Commenting further, Godwin blamed the Babale’s accident on underage driving.
“Truck driver, who was an underage, lost control as a result of mechanical deficiency, which led to the removal of the vehicle shaft propeller.
“The truck rammed into several vehicles, causing accidents along the highway.
“Ten persons lost their lives on the spot while 15 others sustained fatal injuries.
“Those who sustained injuries were admitted at Toro medical centre while the remains of those who died were deposited at the Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Jos.
“Truck owners should always maintain their vehicles, monitor their drivers and as well desist from giving out trucks to their underage boys,” he said.
