150 farmers get irrigation machines from NERI in Yobe

A Non-Governmental Organization, Northeast Regional Initiative (NERI) has distributed irrigation equipment to about 150 farmers in Geidam town, a community mostly ravaged by the Boko Haram insurgency.

The measure is to improve their means of livelihood.

Flagging off the distribution on Friday, the Emir of Ngazargamu, Alhaji Tijjani Sale Gaidam called on the beneficiaries to make good use of the equipment to provide for their families.

“This is to improve your food processing speed so as to avoid a repeat farmers being rob their harvest by Boko Haram insurgents, while trying to process and convey their hard earn crops home, so don’t sell the donated farm inputs to re-marry.

The emir, who was represented by district head of Geidam, Alhaji Ahmad Kachalla, commended the initiative for helping the Youths and other vulnerable people to rebuild their lives through various programmes.

Speaking earlier, the Programme Coordinator, Abatcha Kachalla, said the initiative considered Damakarwa village as farming community to help the youths and farmers escape from being lured into the Boko Haram fold.

He explained that the initiative in collaboration with Gaidam local government council had also empowered the vulnerable farmers with thrashing machine, grinding mills and corn hauling machine in flash points.

In his goodwill message, the acting local government chairman, Alhaji Modu, said the activities of NERI had impacted on the lives of thousands of people in the local government “But, like Oliver twist, we always need more” he said.

One of the beneficiaries, Malam Muhammad Aisami, promised that they will not sell out the equipment to remarry, but rather make judicious use of them.
