Is Kingibe’s award a plot to succeed Buhari?
On Sunday, former Governor of Kaduna State and leader of Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Alhaji Balarabe Musa, alleged that the real motive for giving Chief M.K.O Abiola a post-humous honour and recognising June 12 as Democracy Day “is to prepare Ambassador Babagana Kingibe to take over from President Muhammadu Buhari”. PAUL OKAH speaks with Nigerians on the allegation.
Like Danjuma, like Balarabe
It is high time in Nigeria that we started taking hate speech very seriously. Many people are saying things they don’t have prove of, because they are not being prosecuted. If the government can use one of them as scapegoat, then there is no reason why the situation will continue. The other day, it was General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma trying to pitch Nigerians against the APC government by claiming that the Army is in league with the Boko Haram sect to kill many northerners. As if that was not enough, he equally suggested that we should buy guns and protect ourselves, as if we are living in Thomas Hobbes’ state of the nation, where life was brutish, nasty and short. Such much not be allowed to continue. Mr Balarabe should be made to explain his claim. it is not enough to formulate ideas and assumptions and let it out of your mind to destabilize Nigeria. We have outgrown that.

There is truth in every rumour
All I can say is that there is no reason why we should totally condemn or reject the point or observation recently made by Alhaji Balarabe Musa, because there must be an element in truth in it, even though the North will now seek for another means; since their secret has been exposed. It is common knowledge that there are cabals who determine what happens in Nigeria and who should become the president. Buhari may be the president, but there are people he is loyal to, who can make or mar him just with a snap of the finger. As someone who has been in the corridors of power for a very long time, Alhaji Balarabe was not just making an empty claim, because the issue he raised is a weighty one that deserves to be looked into. It is just like when TY Danjuma alleged that the Army is being funded to decimate some parts of the North. He was neither arrested nor prosecuted, because those in power knew that he was talking the truth. Therefore, there is a truth in every rumour, so let’s just wait and see.

Just a false witness
It is biblicaly and legally wrong for one to bear false witness. In fact, the Bible condemns it in toto in the 8th commandment, which says: “Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbour”. In this case, the false witness is Balarabe’s claim that the North wants to use Babagana Kingibe to replace Buhari in 2019, because of ill-health. It is false because President Buhari is 100 percent fit to continue with the leadership of this country otherwise, he would not have declared for a second tenure. Buhari means well for Nigeria and does not deserve the distractions from elder statesmen like Balarabe Musa and others who should know better. However, I support his advice for other Nigerians like Dora Akunyili, Azikiwe, Herbert Macaulay to be given national awards.

Balarabe is an alarmist
One annoying thing about Nigerians is that many of us talk without facts, not minding the implications of our statements. Alhaji Balarabe Musa is an alarmist who cannot defend his statement in a law court. Perhaps he needs to be reminded that Nigeria is in a situation whereby we need to thread cautiously. As the leader of PRP, he is someone who is supposed to weigh the full implications of his statements on the rest of Nigerians and not just say things because of the political effects it will have on his party. He should stop being an alarmist and focus on how to move the country forward. He has been a former governor of Kaduna State, so the contribution he ought to offer for the progress of Nigeria ought to be a positive one and not to throw the country into disunity and ethnic divides. The national awards to outstanding Nigerians like MKO Abiola, Fawehinmi and Kingibe were all in the clear conscience and supported by Nigerians and should not be politicized by anyone.

APC a transparent government
I am not surprised that Mr Balarabe is making such a claim at this critical point in the political history of Nigeria. He has always been a mischief maker for as long as many of us can remember. However, he need not be taken seriously, because he is just seeking political relevance. Having been away from power for a long time, he wants to be noticed by making weighty statements he cannot prove. The APC government should be more focused on the national convention coming up in two days time and not careless statements from politicians seeking relevance. If President Muhammadu Buhari is not healthy enough to continue in office, he would have said so himself. Every Nigerian knows that the president is running a transparent and honest government and will never like to put the country in jeopardy by contesting for a second tenure when he has health challenges.

Cabals running Nigeria
Truth be told, there are cabals running the government. There is an Hausa Oligarchy and the people directing what should and what ought not be done in Nigeria, so Buhari is only doing their bidding; otherwise he will not last a day as President. Every government in power, since our Independence days, has always been under the control of this cabal and that is the reason why the country is not moving forward. Forget the anti corruption crusade that is purportedly being carried out by the administration, there are many Nigerians who will remain untouchable as long as they are alive. Why do you think that IBB has never been involved in any prosecution being carried out by any administration? Even with the June 12 brouhaha, nobody linked his name to anything negative. Therefore, Mr Musa was right when he raised the concern of the North planning to promote another candidate to continue the tenure of Buhari. I only hope that it will not be the case of Umar Musa Yar’Adua all over.

Nigerian should beware
I feel that Mr Balarabe is just making a baseless allegation. On the other hand, it maybe true, but he should know better. One should not come to the public to heat up the polity except if he has facts. It could be recalled that Yar’Adua of blessed memory could not complete his term in office because of ill-health. The same scenario is playing out today, with Buhari insisting on completing a second tenure, despite his ill health. In as much as we cannot convince him to resign and retire to Daura, we should hope for the best, because we should not pray for the same situation that produced Goodluck Jonathan.

APC can intervene
There’s bound to be speculations as we get closer to the 2019 general elections. It is clear that the APC is facing serious internal crisis, so different people would like to catch into the crisis. As the leader of PRP, Balarabe Musa is only trying to make his voice heard and the party noticed. It’s all allowed in politics. Nevertheless, I sincerely hope that the allegations are not true. It is common knowledge that Buhari is having some health challenges. When he was frequenting the UK for medical check ups, many of us believed that he would not survive, especially as he spent many months under the care of doctors and left the administration to his Vice, Osinbanjo. If the APC feels that he may not survive another four years in office, then there is still an ample time to appoint a replacement for him in the primaries. One man can never be allowed to scuttle the chances of the ruling party at the polls.
