1st class graduate: My success came from reading, prayers

The first male student to graduate with First Class in the Faculty of Law, University of Abuja (UniAbuja), Prince Wayne Elijah Chikezie, has said that reading his books and praying to God every single semester helped him to conquer his challenges.

In an interview with journalists in Abuja, Chikezie who was among the graduating students at the university’s recent convocation, said when he gained admission in 2014, he had planned that he was going to make first class and break the record, which showed that  no one had ever  made first class at UniAbuja since its establishment in 1988.  And the Law Faculty had never had any first class graduate until 2018 when one Elizabeth Ayua broke the record.  Then in 2019, two other ladies, Mariam, Aisha and I followed suit.

“I worked hard by reading my notebooks, textbooks and research materials assiduously and prayed to God every single semester in the school that my efforts be crowned with success. “God, in his infinite mercy, made it a reality. My joy knew no bounds when I heard I was among the three first class graduating students.

“Part of what inspired me was the zeal to want to make my late dad proud having spent so much on me since my primary school days. “There is no better feeling in the world than being able to put smiles on the faces of parents who had sacrificed so much for you,” he said.

He said the greatest challenge was the phobia of UniAbuja Law Faculty itself.

“I heard stories that no matter what anyone did; no matter how you read, you wouldn’t be able to make a first class. So I had that phobia as my greatest challenge.

“But I later said to the Phobia in my mind that my God was bigger than it. So, I just fired on.”

Chikezie however, advised younger learners to strive to surmount their fears by reading their books,  and make sure to engage in law chamber activities as that will aid their memories in retaining statutory and judicial authorities.
