2 arraigned for assault, illegal electricity connection

An electrician, Kazeem Tajudeen, 51, and a civil servant, Oluwaseyi Akintunde, 38, have been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly reconnecting illegally after being disconnected by an Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC).
The defendants, who were charged to court, yesterday, are facing a three-count charge of misdemeanour, assault and breach of peace.
The Prosecutor, Sergeant Mike Unah, said that the defendants committed the offences on January 27, 2018, at about 2.30pm at Bamako Estate.
He said, “The defendants assaulted the complainant Mr Bamise Opanuga, an IKEDC official, by obstructing him from discharging his lawful duties.
“The defendants also conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by illegally reconnecting electric wire which the IKEDC, Ojodu Branch, disconnected without permission.’’
Unah said that the defendants’ acted in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace.
When the charge was read to them, they, however, pleaded not guilty.
The Magistrate, Mr A. A. Fashola, granted them bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The offences contravened Section 174 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the section prescribes three years imprisonment for offenders.
Fashola adjourned the case till March 19.
