2 unemployed face N2.9m property theft

An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday granted N100, 000 bail each to two unemployed men, Adeniji Taiwo and Joseph Okon, charged with stealing goods worth N2.9 million.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Olufunke Sule-Amzat, said the accused persons should provide two responsible sureties as part of their bail conditions.
Sule-Amzat said the sureties should be gainfully employed and should show evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government.
The accused persons, Taiwo, 29, and Okon, 28, are facing three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and stealing.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp.
Benson Emuerhi, had told the court that the accused committed the offences with some other persons still at large on May 6 at Fola Osibo St., Lekki Phase 1 in Lagos.
Emuerhi said the accused broke into the shop of the complainant, Mrs Elizabeth Adenuga, and stole the goods.
“They broke into the shop using blades, pliers and other dangerous weapons.
“The duo entered through the ceiling and stole some cloths, bags and lace materials, all valued at N2.9 million,” he said.
Emuerhi said the accused were apprehended by the some security guards who handed them over to the police.
The offences contravened Sections 287, 307 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Section 287 provides a threeyear jail term for offenders.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The case was adjourned until Nov.
29 for mention.
