200 level students shot for arguing with cultists over phone

A 200 level student of the department of political science, Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) Mkpat-Enin, Mr. Emem Jimmy, who was shot by gunman suspected to member of a secret group on Thursday last week has been confirmed death.

It was gathered that Jimmy was shot on Thursday at 8:30 pm when he resisted cultists whom sources said trying to dispossess him of   his phones and other belongings.

A statement by the head directorate of information, Public Relations and Protocol of the institution, Mr Akaninyene Ibanga, made available to our correspondent on Monday, said that the victim was rushed to a medical facility for treatment where he died, two days after.

The statement said, “Late Emem was shot on Thursday, May 02, 2019 between the hours of 8.30 – 9pm at Wilson Idiong Street, off Ikot Okoro Road, Obioakpa, Oruk Anam Local Government Area in an attempt to resist unknown gunmen from snatching his phone and was rushed immediately to the hospital for treatment.

“The University Management took over the hospital bills just to save his life but on Saturday late Emem could not survive the gun shot, so he finally passed on at about 12.30pm”.

Meanwhile, the management of the University has expressed it sadness over the unfortunate incident and assured that the criminal elements behind the act would be arrested by the security agencies.

 “The Vice- chancellor of the University on behalf of Management, staff and students expresses deepest sadness over the unfortunate demise of late Emem Jimmy, a 200 level male student of Political Science Department.”

The statement read in parts, “the Vice-Chancellor hereby condoles with members of the family of the deceased. All members of the University Community should remain calm and continue with their normal businesses/duties while speedy effort is being made by the relevant law enforcement agencies to fetch out the perpetrators of this heinous act”.
