2015: UPP insists on e-voting

United Progressive Party (UPP) has insisted on the use of Electronic Voting System (EVS) for 2015 general elections, saying that the method would eliminate all the manipulations and violence that had characterised previous elections in the country.
The party also explained that the security situation in some parts of the country had reinforced its persistent and consistent calls for the introduction of the EVS for the 2015 general elections.

Senate had penultimate week been divided over the use of EVS for the 2015 elections, but the national chairman of UPP, Chief Chekwas Okorie, in an interview with Blueprint insisted that with the necessary political will and sincerity of purpose by the federal government, National Assembly and the INEC, the use of EVS could be possible.

The party expressed optimism that with EVS in place, voter’s participation would increase to an unprecedented proportion.
He said: “The security in some parts of the country has reinforced our persistent and consistent call for the introduction of EVS for the 2015 general elections. We believe that with the necessary political will and sincerity of purpose by the federal government, National Assembly and INEC, this can be achieved.”

While lending the party’s support to the national conference, he said their party recommended a further review of the modalities to allow a simple majority of delegates at the conference to arrive at a decision, instead of the present stipulated 75 per cent require arriving at in the absence of a consensus.
