2016 budget padding: Reps lift Jibrin’s suspension

House of Representatives yesterday announced the lifting of the suspension it slammed on its former Chairman of the Committee on Appropriations, Abdulmumin Jibrin, since September 2016.
The Kano state-born lawmaker was suspended for “180 legislative sitting days,” and given a condition that he must submit a written apology to the House, over his allegation of fraudulent padding of the 2016 budget against some principal officers of the House, including Speaker Yakubu Dogara, as well as allegation of members taking home illegal monies as running costs.
The House had described the lawmaker’s action as “bringing the institution to disrepute,” but while the period of the suspension had elapsed, Jibrin could not return to the House for failing to comply with the written apology condition as resolved by the House, vowing never to do so.
Dogara, who announced the suspension lifting at plenary yesterday, stated that Jibrin had “met all conditions, and can resume sitting anytime from now, if he so wishes, unless there is a new development.”
Jibrin, in the letter of apology, said he was acting “in compliance with the House’s resolution of September 25, 2016, suspending me for 180 legislative days…”
“With this, it appeared he has fulfilled all the conditions,” Dogara stated as he waved the letter to his colleagues.
