2019: APGA strategises to win area councils

Ahead of 2019 general elections, the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has planned to clinch all the seats in the six area councils.
Chairman of the party in the Territory, Hon. Chukwuebuka Okolie, who disclosed this at the weekend, said “APGA as one of the strong opposition party in Nigeria has put machinery on ground to capture all the area councils in the FCT.”
Okolie made the disclosure at Dangara, a suburb of Kwali area council, when a coalition of 12 groups of different political parties adopts APGA, and nominated Hon. Usman Jiya as their sole candidate to run in the council chairmanship in 2019 elections.
He noted that the party had performed well at the last elections and had further gained more popularity given the achievements by those elected under the platform of the party in the Territory.
In his remarks, Jiya advised the party supporters to embark on peaceful campaigns from ward to ward to solicit for votes.
He said “goal of good governance should always be to enable the people to attain sustenance, self-esteem, and freedom,” adding that “good governance must provide enabling environment for the people to obtain their own food, acquire education to understand their environment, acquire skills to exploit available economic opportunities and to live as freemen and women in the society.”
Jiya added that he had done it before was “set to do it again so as to enhance the living standard of the people irrespective of party differences.”
“All that we want is a conducive atmosphere to enable us to implement our people oriented programmes to ensure rapid political growth of our area. As democrats, we must be seen to promote the lofty ideals of our great party,” he said.
He called on the electorate to obtain their permanent voter cards (PVCs) and vote for APGA in the area councils’ elections.
In his welcome remarks, the FCT Secretary of the party, Chief Stanley N. Agwara, said democracy would not thrive in an atmosphere of rancour, chaos and violence pointing out that all hands must be on deck to check the situation.
Agwara assured that members of his party would conduct themselves in an orderly and mature manner in the 2019 elections to avoid violence, adding that lack of tolerance and patience were some of the factors that lead to disagreements and violence in any society.
He urged stakeholders to ensure that all political activities were conducted in a peace manner and sense of responsibility and appealed to political leaders and followers to shun actions that could lead to destruction of lives and property.
