As politicians scheme for the 2019 general elections, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on the Airforce, Hon. Samson Okwu, has described the return of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as good move, noting that he is still a powerful force.
He cautioned those, including Kaduna state Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, who were describing Atiku’s recent move as a joke to have a rethink.
“I think anybody who sees Atiku as a joker is doing so at his own peril. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is not a politician that you can take for a joke. I believe he is a man of integrity. I believe he is a man who, before he takes his decisions, he must have planned very well,” Okwu said.
Okwu, who represents Oju/Obi federal constituency on the platform of the PDP, said Atiku’s return is a welcome idea for the party, and that “Atiku is a fighter, he has the energy, he has all it takes, and I believe such a person coming to join a national party like the PDP, it is not a joke.”
“What led to the formation of APC was as a result of President (Goodluck) Jonathan’s refusal to participate in a free and fair party primaries, that was what led to five governors defecting and that was what made Atiku to leave too; so one thing first, you have to look at what made them leave.
“The same thing is now here, the man is saying that the board of trustees of the APC should be constituted, but they are saying no. Because we don’t learn in Nigeria; a lot of governors of the APC are saying that President Buhari should be the only candidate, so people are set to leave the party because the party is a platform where you allow everybody to participate,” he said.
