2019: Customs generated #1.5bn duty charges in Katsina – Official

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘B’ generated about N1.5 billion as customs duty on smuggled vehicles in 2019.

The controller in charge of the zone, Mr Mustapha Sarki-Kebbi, stated in a chat with newsmen Thursday in Katsina.

“You know Federal Operations Unit does not have target, our target is to make seizures and we made a lot of seizures because what we made in 2019 doubled what we did in 2018.

“But the Comptroller-General of Customs designated all Federal Operations Units across the country to collect duty on smuggled vehicles, which we have been doing since end of October, 2019, to date.

“I can tell you that as at January  21, 2020, the unit generated over N1.5 billion as duty on smuggled vehicles,” he said.

He also said that the customs had made a total of 48 seizures conveyed by 38 vehicles and four trucks.

He said items included, foreign rice, sugar, vegetable oil, bales of second-hand clothes, cartons of spaghetti, green tea, condensed milk, touch lights, tiger head batteries and sweets.
