Governors and key political leaders from the North Central geo-political zone have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to seek re-election in the 2019 general elections.
The call was made by the group yesterday at the regional meeting of the national committee of Buhari support groups in Abuja, saying they would only persuade and compel him to re-contest the position, although there because is no alternative at the moment who could sustain the change and economic growth taking place in the country.
Among those who called for the president’s second term in office were; Governors Samuel Ortom (Benue), Simon Lalong (Plateau), Tanko Al-Makura (Nasarawa), and George Akume, former governor of Benue and a serving senator, who moved the motion for Buhari’s second term in office and was seconded by governor Lalong of Plateau state.
The motion was thereafter unanimously adopted by the audience comprising All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwarts from the zone.
Citing reasons for their decision, Akume listed the successes in the fight against terrorism, economic recovery, sustenance of democracy, restoration of Nigeria’s reputation in the comity of nations, and Buhari’s personal integrity and patriotism.
He added the constitution recognised that four years are too short for leaders to record lasting achievements and legacies for the people; hence the provision for a second term.
Lending his voice to the discussion, Ortom stated: “For 2019, there is no credible presidential candidate for the APC other than Buhari.”
Buhari, in a speech delivered on his behalf by Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, assured that the economy was set to be on a better pedestal, following steps already taken by government in that regard.
