2019 Shites protest: 60 members arraigned for homicide, public disturbance

Shite group arrested during the July 22, 2019 protest in Abuja has been arraigned before an FCT high court.

The 60 of them were members of the proscribed Islamic movement of Nigeria (IMN).

All of them pleaded not guilty to the charge that bothers on homicide, disturbances of public peace and destruction of government properties.

The protest that took place within the Central Business District of Abuja left a deputy commissioner of police , Usman Umar and one Precious Owolabi, a corps member with channels television dead.

The defendants claimed not to understand english and the charge was read to them in hausa language, they all pleaded not guilty.

After the plea taking, the prosecution counsel, Simon laoung, urged the court to remand the defendants in correctional yard in Kuje haven been held in custody by the  SARS previously. 

He also urged the court to move its sitting to Kuje due to logistics.

The defence counsel, Bala Dakum, did not oppose the prosecutors’ request but told the court that he intends to move a bail application.

The trial judge, Justice Sulaiman Belgore, remanded the defendants in SARs custody till December 10 when bail application and venue of trial will be heard.
