2020: FG rehabilitated, handed over 17 roads to tertiary institutions – Fashola

The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, Tuesday, said the federal government in 2020 rehabilitated and handed over 17 roads to the Nigerian tertiary institutions.

The roads were constructed under the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing’s special road intervention programme for tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

Speaking at the commissioning and handing over of the rehabilitated 1.92Km internal road at the Nigerian Law School, Bwari, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Fashola said, FG was currently intervening in 43 roads in the higher institutions across the country.

On the law school road, the minister, who was represented by the Federal Controller of Works, FCT, Engr. Yakubu Usman, said the project was aimed at supporting education.

He said a total of 85 Nigerians were engaged during the execution of the project and charged the authorities of the Nigerian Law School to ensure its proper use.

Fashola said: “Currently, there are 43 road interventions within tertiary institutions across Nigeria, and students are expressing renewed enthusiasm with regards to attending classes, because some of the defective roads have been restored to good condition.

“To date, 29 road intervention projects have been completed with 17 already handed over in 2020. Today, we are handing over this one in (the Nigerian Law School, Bwari, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja) as a critical intervention to support education.

“This point must be made that although this is a civil works project, it is an investment in education. During the construction, 85 people were employed in the process of contributing to the job creation initiatives of the government, and it is hoped that the school will now ensure that this asset is used properly and not aborted.’’

The Director-General, Nigerian Law School, Prof. Isa Hayatu Chiroma, SAN, who was represented by the Secretary to the Council, Ms Elizabeth Max-Uba, thanked the federal government for the project and asked for further interventions in the school’s five other campuses across the country.
