2020 pilgrimage: NCPC boss Pam inspects facilities at Asaba airport

The executive secretary, Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), Rev. Yakubu Pam, recently inspected facilities at the Asaba International Airport in preparation for this year’s December general pilgrimage to Israel, Rome and Greece.

According to a press statement issued in Abuja Wednesday by the Commission’s head of media, Celestine Toruka, the ES after his inspection tour of the airport described it as “perfect and one of the best in the country after Lagos and Abuja.”

Blueprint Weekend reports that the airport manager, Mr. Austine Ayemidejor, who conducted the NCPC boss round the major facilities at the airport, informed the NCPC helmsman that “critical facilities at the airport have been certified by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) in line with global best practices.”

Ayemidejor said further that the “runway at the airport is one of the best in the country, and can take any aircraft no matter its size,” adding that the airport had already completed four international flights “seamlessly.”

The Commission began this year’s airport inspection early in November and has so far inspected no fewer than eight international airports including the Asaba’s which would be used for this year’s pilgrimage operations.

DPR sensitises public against gas, petrol fire outbreaks at Christmas

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has embarked on a massive sensitisation of the public on the proper use of petroleum products during Christmas.

Its zonal controller in Owerri, Mrs. Roseline Wilkie, said this on Friday while briefing journalists on the agency’s measures to ensure fire-free celebrations during the season.

She said the sensitisation programme, which began on Friday, would see the agency’s staff visiting depots and petrol stations to create awareness on measures to prevent hazards from petroleum products.

“By December 1, we will be monitoring petroleum products remotely, right from the depots and outlets, in an automated manner.

We will also monitor the trucks; we want to ensure the trucks are safe for movement to various destinations. We want to create the awareness that it is an unsafe act for people to go near a fallen truck, talk less scooping fuel from it. We have had a few trucks that fell and we see people going to scoop the products.

“We will also engage in compliance, especially making filling stations to remind their customers of non-use of phones while buying petroleum products,” she said.

She advised that gas cylinders should be kept away from sunlight and heat sources.

“If you are buying LPG cylinders, look for Nigeria Industrial Standard (NIS) number on the cylinder and always check cylinders for expiry dates. Repairing a faulty cylinder at home is unsafe. Always consult a certified technician. Replace hoses and valves at periodic intervals and immediately a leak is discovered.

“Ensure gas burner is turned off when not in use, have your cylinders checked regularly for leaks and integrity by certified professionals, sensitise households on safe handling practices, report any observed suspicious or unsafe practices at any gas station to the nearest DPR office.”
