2023: A fresh look at unending political migration in Oyo state

BAYO AGBOOLA in Ibadan, ahead of the 2023 general elections, gives an update on the many cases of cross-carpeting by politicians from one political party to the other in Oyo state.

The political atmosphere in Oyo state in the last few months has witnessed a flurry of events, the good, the bad and the ugly, most especially, what could best be described as an unending exodus of politicians from across the nooks and crannies of the state to other parties.

The criss-crossing of political parties by politicians in the state is all in a scheme to contest the coming 2023 general elections, particularly, the State House of Assembly and the top of it all, the race to the Agodi Government House.

There are other categories of defectors, the latest being those who are leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC) in protest of the choice of a Muslim-Muslim Ticket recently made by its candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In Oyo state, presently, politicians in the state are, more than before on daily basis, turning to what can best be described as mobile politicians going by the wave of movement from one political party to another in search of tickets to contest for positions in the 2023 general elections particularly the House of Assembly, House of Representatives and the Senatorial seats.

At the last count, the ruling party in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the main opposition party in the state, the All Progressives Congress (APC) seemed to be the worst hit.

Their faithful are moving in their droves into the Accord Party and the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), among others, which became more pronounced immediately after the primary elections in the two major political parties in the state.

For example, in the ruling party, PDP, it is like a volcano, an eruption of defectors in the past few months with prominent figures in the party including the serving deputy governor of the state, Engineer Rauf Olaniyan, and the serving Senator for Oyo South Senatorial District, Dr Kola Balogun unceremoniously leaving the party for the APC amidst allegations that Governor Makinde allegedly favoured another aspirant against his seat for the 2023 general elections .

The situation is also similar in the All Progressives Congress (APC) camp in the state with leading key figures in the party dumping APC for another political party, mostly the Accord Party to secure tickets to contest the 2023 general elections in Oyo state following unresolved controversy resulting in crisis over the party’s primary election at all levels in and across the state.

Till date, it is on record that APC in Oyo state has lost to Accord Party key politicians including the party’s governorship candidate in the 2019 general elections, Chief Adebayo Adelabu and the likes of Chief Rotimi Ajanaku and others who are by every standard not a push over when it comes to real politics in and across Oyo state.

Chief Adelabu while announcing his defection from the APC to Accord Party emphasized among other things that ” Accord Party is the political platform upon which his gubernatorial ambition shall be pursued to actualization”and that it was needless to restate in details, reason for relinquishing my APC membership on the point that such reason is public knowledge, saying,
” a time exists in the life of a sincere aspiring man of the public when events and circumstances lesson the operation of his mind onto new decision, new desire and new determination. Such time now finds expression in my political career which necessities vital change, fundamental decision and refreshing determination.

“It is therefore on this basis that I hereby declare the withdrawal of my membership from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to ACCORD Party of Nigeria (ACCORD). This is the political platform upon which my gubernatorial ambition shall be pursued to actualization by the guidance and grace of the Almighty Allah. It is needless to restate in details, reason for relinquishing my APC membership on the point that such reason is public knowledge. The man dies in him who keeps silent in the face of blatant injustice and the life of a lie is a matter of little time. Evil people struggle in vain in their conspiracy against their innocent fellowman because malice is a poor match for destiny.

What is important above all is that my leaders, supporters and teeming people of Oyo State are hereby assured of my determination never to disappoint them in the pursuit of my gubernatorial ambition to reality by the Will of God. I wish to present my humble self for the Political Liberation Movement to rescue our pacesetting state from the bad operation of clueless and inept people in Government and in the other Party. We shall together inaugurate a new Era of peace and Progress in our Dear State in line with my 7-Point Agenda when I become the Executive Governor by God’s Grace in 2023. There is accord for our Vision in the ACCORD PARTY of Nigeria. We hereby move to therein accordingly.

Amidst the defection galore, the APC apparently sensing the situation ahead raised a reconciliation team led by Senator Olufemi Lanlehin to mend the crack fences within the party ahead the 2023 polls with the team moving around the state to reunite APC
stakeholders within the state during which the committee stormed Oyo zone this Tuesday, 12 July, 2022 at the party’s Oyo Central Senatorial District Office, Alagbon, on the Oyo-Iseyin Road,Oyo township with the meeting attracting all major stakeholders in the Federal Constituency, with those unavoidably absent adequately represented.

Chairman of the Reconciliation Committee, Senator Olufemi Lanlehin in his remarks reiterated the readiness of the party and its governorship candidate, Senator Teslim Folarin, to act speedily on whatever suggestions put forward in a bid to mend fences, assured all those aggrieved that his committee would do its best to assuage their fears.

While the ruling PDP in the state is busy in its task at depleting other opposition parties in the state through the on going defection, the Accord Party on its party is leaving no stone unturned at stabilizing the party the more in the state for the 2023 general elections.

With all eyes on the February general elections, all the political parties in Oyo state no doubt are bent at springing surprise during the governorship election in the state come February this year.
