2023 AFCON qualifier: Super Eagles to face Sao Tome in Uyo as CAF drops Abuja Stadium

The Super Eagles will confront Sao Tome and Principe in ongoing 2023 AFCON qualifiers at Godswill Akapbio International Stadium Uyo after the continental football ruling body, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) blacklisted the Moshood Abiola National Stadium as ‘substandard’.

The Super Eagles had earlier played their two previous home games in the qualifiers against Sierra Leone and Guinea-Bissau at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja after which CAF officials inspected the stadium alongside others across the continent and decided that the Abuja Stadium is not up to the required standard.

In a release, CAF listed the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja  among those that fall below standard in the continent thereby necessitating the approval of Uyo as the alternate home ground for the Super Eagles.

The Super Eagles next game in the qualifiers is an away clash against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone on June 18.

The Super Eagles will host Sao Tome and Principe in their final match of the qualifiers in September.

Jose Peseiro’s side top Group A of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers with nine points and need a point from their next game against Sierra Leone to secure a place in Cote d’Ivoire.
