2023 Census: NPC holds stakeholders summit in Yobe, urges involvement

The National Population Commission (NPC) in Yobe state, Tuesday, held stakeholders summit in preparation for the 2023 Population and Housing Census to ensure everyone is counted across the country.

The Federal Commissioner Yobe State Office of the Commission, Mai Aliyu Mohammed, assured that the census would be conducted inline with United Nations best practices using technology in the enumeration processes.

Aliyu Mohammed made this known tuesday during the Summit at the Banquet hall, Government House, Damaturu.

He noted that the importance of the census is not limited to identifying the accurate number of citizens but also to allow for adequate planning and distribution of resources across all the geopolitical zones.

According to him, the unique thing about the exercise is that both the recruitment of enumeration officers, design of the questionnaires and the housing census are technology driven, hence the engagement of the stakeholders towards the success of the exercise in the state.

He commended the state Governor, Mai Mala Bun,i for the assistance given to the Commissions in the state to carry its function effectively without any hitches.

Declaring the summit opened, Buni said theme of the summit “getting the people involved”, captured the commitment to mobilizing people to be actively involved in the process of the 2023 national population and housing census.

He revealed that the census exercise apart from establishing numerical strength of the communities, state of the nation, also provide the government with the required data for effective planning and allocation of the resources and infrastructure for development.

“For us in yobe state the population and housing census is very important necessary and crucial taking into cognisance the unfortunate displacement and relocation of communities by Boko Haram insurgency,” he said.

He urged the NPC to collaborate with the governments at all levels, traditional rulers, community leaders as well as civil society organisations while conducting the enlightenment and sensitisation on the exercise before the commencement of the census in 2023.
