2023: Imo INEC REC assures on credible polls despite attacks

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Imo state Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Sylvia Uchenna Agu, has assured Imolites that the commission would conduct credible polls in 2023, despite the incessant attacks on the commission’s facilities in the state by hoodlums.

She gave the assurance during a Stakeholders’ meeting organised by the commission  for politicians, electoral officers of the commission, the media and the general public Wednesday.

She said, “As the polls draw near, I am personally convinced INEC would deliver on her mandate of carrying out a free, fair and credible election, especially with the use of the Bimordal Voter Association System (BVAS) which for me is a game changer.

“With the BVAS and Electronic Transmission of polling unit results, it would not be business as usual because it is only what emanates from the field that shall be transmitted to INEC Result Viewing Portal.”

Prof Agu seized the opportunity afforded by the interaction to appeal to those who registered between 2011 and 2022( both old and recent registrants)who are yet to pick their Permanent Voter Cards(PVCs)  to go and pick them at the 27 LGAs of the state as the PVCs are not issued by proxy.

She thanked the police and other security agencies for responding to attacks on INEC facilities in the state, adding that if not for their quick responses, the damage would have been colossal. She further commiserated with the Imo state Police command which lost an officer during the Owerri headquarters’ attack.
