The All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, can defeat his New Nigerian Peoples Party counterpart, Rabiu Kwankwaso, in Kano state during the 2023 general elections, the state Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba has said.
Late Alhaji MKO Abiola defeated Late Alhaji Bashir Tofa, who is from Kano, during the 1993 presidential election in Kano, thus the Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s commissioner beleived that history might repeat itself with the current circumstances.
Addressing the “Let’s Talk Nigeria” programme organised by the Kaduna League of veteran journalists in partnership with Arewa House and Hamdala Hotel, Garba, who was former President of Nigeria Union of Journalists, said in politics anything can happen.
Responding to a question on the chances of the APC presidential candidate in Kano, he said, “I know the former governor of Kano state is also going to be on the ballot but history can repeat itself again in Kano because late Moshood Abiola of the defunct SDP defeated Kano born Late Bashir Tofa of the defunct NRC during the 1993 presidential election. I’m confident Kano state will produce lots of votes come 2023.
“The votes from Nasarawa local government alone is more than the entire votes of the entire South East combined. I’m confident we will deliver Kano state to APC insha Allah. The state government will provide an enabling environment for all the candidates and anything can happen and all candidates will certainly get their share of votes depending on how the electorates perceived them.”
Speaking on how Governor Ganduje has ensured that Kano state enjoyed good security, he said, his governor “has provided enabling environment for all regardless of your tribe, ethnicity and religion. Kano state with the highest population in Northern Nigeria is the most peaceful state.”
Garba commended the efforts of the Kaduna League of Veteran Journalists and assured them of needed support, while lamenting that, “it is only in Journalism that solidarity and support for the profession is not gotten, it is good to leave a legacy in whatever you do particularly in human development”.
Former Chairman of Kaduna NUJ Council and vice Chairman of the Kaduna League of Veteran Journalists, Chief Andrew Fadason, said as veteran Journalists, they are concerned about happenings in the profession and committed to providing genuine mentorship to up coming Journalists.
