A leading presidential aspirants on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Orefo Nnamdi Onochie, has called on the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan to immediately forward the amendments to the Electoral Act to President Muhammadu Buhari for his assent.
Onochie’s request was contained in a statement signed by Mr Ken Amechi Enemokwu, of the campaign organisation in Abuja.
According to him, the APC came into office in 2015 due to the robust electoral reforms and amendments to the electoral act which introduced so many innovations and technology to our electoral system.
He advised the Nigerian senate under Senator Lawan’s leadership to quickly work on the last amendments to the act, so as to give enough time for the Executive to add their input and make the document ready before the 2023 general election.
“The 2015 presidential election that ushered in the APC into office was adjudged by both local and international observers as free, fair, credible and transparent, because of the reforms of the electoral system and amendments to the act by the PDP administration.
“That is why I am calling on the current Nigerian Senate to do the needful by sending the last amendments of the act to the President for his assent on time, in order to allow enough period for the Executive to add their input and get it ready before the 2023 General Election”- Dr. Onochie said.
He said that the world is watching Nigeria in view of the next election and reiterated that a good electoral system is a panacea for good governance and economic prosperity.
“Whereas the APC enjoyed the electoral reforms of the PDP in 2015, the party has been dodgy and shying away from providing Nigerians a more better electoral system as seen in 2019.”
