2023: Umahi defeats arch rival in fresh Senate primary

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state Sunday won in the freshly conducted All Progressives congress (APC) senatorial primary elections for the South district of the state.

The earlier senatorial primary elections of APC on May 28, 2022, had produced the younger brother of Gov. Umahi, Austine Umahi as the winner but he declined the position after the Governor lost the presidential primaries of the party, thereby paving way for his brother the Gov.

Though the party had a re-run on June 9, 2022, which produced Gov. Umahi as the senatorial candidate of the party but the declaration of the governor did not go down well for the second runner up
Princess Ann Agomeze of the first primaries election of the party.

Since then the candidature of the Ebonyi south senatorial zone has been in contention but the Federal High court sitting in Abakaliki ordered a fresh primary.

In the fresh primaries election of the party held on Sunday, 31st July 2022 at Afikpo North local government had Gov. David Umahi as the winner of the election.
He emerged with a total vote of 250 his brother and 3 other contestants.

Announcing the result of the election which took place at the Afikpo North Local Government council Headquarters, the Chairman of the electoral panel, Prof Adebayo Kehinde declared the Ebonyi State Governor winner of the election.

He said,” I Prof Kayinde Emmanuel Adebayo by the powers bestowed on me by the National Working Committee of the Party, I declare as followed, the total number of voters, 285, accredited votes, 275 votes, votes cast, 275, number of valid votes 268 while invalid votes are 7 votes.

“The score is as follows, Augustine Chukwu Umahi scored 10votes, Mrs. Ann Nwanyibuife Agomeze scored 0, Nweze David Umahi scored 250 votes, Mrs. ibiam Magret 3 votes, Mrs. Chukwu Elizabeth Nwakego scored 5 votes.

“Based on the powers invested on me by the National chairman of the APC, I professor Emmanuel Adebayo hereby declared and affirm that Mr. David Nweze Umahi having scored the highest votes is hereby the winner of the primary election for Ebonyi South Senatorial zone”.

The election which was held amidst tight security witnessed the presence of policemen, men of the Nigeria Security, Directorate of State Security Service, DSS and Civil Defence Corps NSCDC, and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

In his acceptance, speech, Governor Umahi noted that other victories of the party depended on his victory as the senatorial candidature of the south district. And further said that he is not surprised by his victory as he has always been a fighter that never lost any battle.
