2 dead, others critically injured in Ebonyi road crash

A road accident involving a hummer Toyota bus and a lorry that occurred in Abakaliki capital city of Ebonyi Saturday claimed life of a year-old baby and a man.

The accident which involved a legislative bus belonging to Abakaliki local government council with plate number 625 AKL and a lorry with plate number EBJ -366 XA was said to have killed a man who was just coming back from the burial of the dead wife.

It was gathered that the lorry carry drinking water was negotiating to a street by Enugu/Abakaliki express way (Ezillo Avenue by Aguogboriga layout) junction when he suddenly moved back and the bus that was said to be following the it closely could not escape but summersaulted.

In  an interview with the elder brother of the driver of the bus, Hon. John Nwofoke, former vice chairman of Abakaliki local government council area who was at the scene of the accident he said, “I just got a phone  call that  my brother who was driving that bus had an accident, I went straight to the hospital and discovered that they were two in the bus. The other person has already died and the other one is still breathing.

“When I got to this place I saw the bus in pieces, but from the questions I asked I was told that the 911 lorry wanted to negotiate to this street on the way he moved back and the bus which was closely behind it in the processes of defending itself but failed now summersaulted.

“I was told that my brother Emmanuel Nwofoke and a driver to the local government chairman was in that bus, but the  driver  to the Chairman was the one that died while my brother is still breathing but sustained a heavy injury, as at the time I left the hospital blood was still gushing out from his head.

“The man that died was coming back from home where he buried his wife that just died; my brother was taken him back to Abakaliki before this accident.

Meanwhile, some concerned citizens who gathered at the scene of the accident said a little baby that was inside the bus died immediately while others who sustained different injuries were taken to Alex Ekwueme University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki.

However, all attempt made to reach Federal Road safety as at the time of this report failed.
