26 victims of Omusu killing given mass burial

Twenty six victims of herdsmen attack on Omusu community of Edumoga-Ehaje in Okpokwu local government area of Benue were yesterday given mass burial amid tears.
The victims were hacked to tragic death by marauding herdsmen in one fell swoop on Monday, the 5th of March this year.
Five of the victims whose bodies had started decomposing or badly mutilated were earlier buried by their families while the remaining 21 were buried yesterday.
The state governor, Samuel Ortom, led the government officials, stakeholders in the state and other mourners to the funeral service, organised for the deceased victims at St.
Bernard Primary School,Ugwu-Okpoga in Okpokwu local government area of the state.
Addressing the mourners and sympathisers at the occasion, Governor Ortom decried that too much blood had been shed in the state due to the atrocities meted on Benue farmers by Fulani herdsmen.
He said herdsmen have continued to kill the local farmers on a daily bases and restated his call on security agencies to arrest the leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore whom he said were the sponsors of the killings in the state.
He said comments made by the leadership of the group, published in various media houses, clearly showed that they were responsible for the carnage in the state.
Ortom, in his condolence message to the bereaved families, said the death of the victims and many others would put an end to the massacre of Benue people.
He stated that the open grazing prohibition and ranches establishment law had come to stay in Benue, noting that there was no land for open grazing and crop farming to go on concurrently.
Ortom assured Benue people that his administration would continue to respond swiftly to security challenges, adding that data were being gathered for compensation for damages caused by herdsmen attacks in Benue.
