3 beggars die of Cholera, another 3 hospitalized in Osun

Osun State Police Command Tuesday disclosed that three persons died of Cholera while another three hospitalized in Ede, Osun state.

The incident happened at Oke-Gada, Ede North local government area of the state on Monday evening.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Yemisi Opalola, who spoke on behalf of the state Commissioner of Police, Olawale Olokode, dispelled the rumour that the beggars were poisoned.

It was gathered that the incident happened after unknown person distributed food to the beggars in the area on Monday evening.

“No fewer than twelve beggars were hospitalised as a result of the strange occurrence. Some of them died. It was as if they were poisoned because we have never experienced such an issue in our community before,” resident stated.

Also, another person simply identified as Dare, told newsmen that he learnt that the beggars were served food by one of those that usually give them food and some of them started vomiting thereafter.

But, the police said information available to the command revealed that cholera killed the beggars and not poison.

According to Opalola, “The Divisional Police Officer of Ede visited the Seriki of Hausa in the community over the incident because they did not report the matter to the police. The Seriki informed him that it was a Cholera outbreak and not food poisoning.”

She confirmed that three persons died while three others are receiving treatment in the hospital, noting that investigation has commenced.
